It’s that time of year again where the winds start swinging round from the south east and Bali’s world waves are gently caressed by those clean off shore winds. The surf scene in Bali is growing from strength to strength and without a doubt some of the worlds best surfers have grown up and live on the beautiful island of Bali surfing the amazing selection of waves from their early days as beginner surfers to their now professional status. There really is something for everyone here and the tropical paradise provides the perfect environment to learn or improve on your existing surfing skills. The friendliness of the locals is completely unique to this part of the world, of course you may get a welcome smile from a local in Europe but its hard to tell if its a friendly smile or just the cold forcing a painful expression on their face. Its also a great time of year to surf and dive on Nusa Lembongan, the waves are predominantly right handers, theres great food and world class diving on our doorstep – so what better place to train for and qualify for your PADI diving qualifications!

Firstly to all those who have not received a personal email from myself thank you for your applications but we have now taken on board our 2010 intern. We had over 250 applications to work through so apologies if we did not email everyone back individually. Shane Crowley will be working alongside Sami this Summer. Great news on the June trip, we now are almost full and have a great mix of gap year students, working professionals, group and solo travelers!

The surf camp in France is going from strength to strength and it looks like a busy and exciting season lining up for some perfect beach breaks, good weather and good times.

I thought I would update the blog with a few video clips.

Here is a little video from the great surf movie “Shades of Bali.” This movie obviously focuses on the world class and challenging waves in Bali. However you can hear Mikala and Rizal comment on the variety of waves and also how we are blessed with perfect offshore winds every day!

Here is a short slideshow of photos taken from last years trips. This year we have invested in new photography equipment and we will be employing a photographer to document the majority of your surfs. We also have a new Go-Pro camera and a number of boards with the Go-Pro mount on the nose so you can film your own surfs in the water! The Go-Pro is not only a great way to help improve your surfing, it is also an original and novel way to get a few pictures of you surfing in a tropical paradise.

We have had an unbelievable number of applications for the intern job and apologise if we havent got back to everyone personally. This does not mean you are not being considered it simply means amongst the 100+ applications we may have overlooked sending a thank you to everyone. All C.V’s are printed and are soon to be shortlisted for the job. The successful candidate for the first intern role will be decided upon by the end of the month and notified accordingly. We will extend the deadline for the second position available until May.

The Bali surf trips are generating loads of interest and bookings are starting to come in for the summer months, there is still time to get on May and Junes trip although spaces are starting to become limited. Get in touch for more information and to reserve your space with a 30% deposit. You can pay by card over the phone, via paypal or bank transfer. Those holding out to see if they get a job will be refunded if they are the successful applicant so dont gamble on the trip of a lifetime book now and secure your space for a surfing and diving expedition of Bali and her sister islands.

Boards and Palm Trees

We are running the first of our Beach Lifeguard and Surf Instructor training weeks at our France Surf Camp in early June. You will undergo a weeks training in preparation for your examination on the final day of the course. Upon completion of the course all participants gain their internationally recognised Beach Lifeguard and Surf Instructor Qualifications. If you are already a level 1 instructor you can also obtain your level 2 with us in the same week. The courses demand a certain amount of personal fitness and determination but will definitely be one of the most rewarding weeks of your life setting you up for a new career in surf instructing or beach life-guarding anywhere in the world. Each course costs €325 and includes accommodation. If you want to do your surf instructors course and your beach lifeguard (you need both qualifications to legally teach surfing) then we offer the two at the discounted rate of €600. These are professional qualifications, internationally recognized and valid for 2 – 3 years. Upon completion of the course you will be given your certificates and also assistance in finding work in your new career. Many students choose to gain these qualifications to allow them to work on the beach during their university holidays. Its not all work however as you will have plenty of time to surf, relax and enjoy the surf camp environment. Dates are yet to be confirmed but we expect to start the course on the first week of June. Lessons are taught in English with German and Spanish translators.

Bali Tour Assistant

Job Description:

We are looking for two interns to join us at our surf camp in Bali. There are two positions available each of which is for a two months duration (May & June or July & August). The key functions of the job will be to assist Star Surf Camps in successful advertising/marketing, handle enquires and take bookings, help with group transport and safety, photograph and document the trips and of course to interact and surf with our guests making sure they are having a great time. All personnel may be asked to perform duties outside of those specified from time to time as needed.

Summary;

• Marketing, advertising & promotions
• Photography & filming
• Ensure customer satisfaction and safety
• Update social networking sites & blogs
• Handle enquires and take bookings if camp leader is unavailable

We are looking for applicants who are outgoing, friendly and approachable. You must be very well organised and willing to work hard throughout your stay. You must have a good understanding of photography and being able to edit photos and movies would be preferred but is not essential.  We are also looking for individuals who already have a good surfing ability and a good knowledge of waves and the ocean, however further training will be provided for this.

The Position will be unpaid however we are willing to pay for accommodation including breakfast and a small allowance will be given for meals per week. The successful applicant will also receive a work phone with Indonesian sim-card and all surfing equipment will be provided for them. You will be working directly under Sami Khalaf (Star Surf Camps Bali – Manager) and will join our fun loving Indonesian staff for a two month work experience of a lifetime, inclusion in the activities such as bungee jumping, and gaining your PADI qualification will be heavily subsidised and any activities you are asked to go on as part of your job shall be for paid for.

There are spaces still available for the pre season trips in May! This is one of the best months to go and surf Bali as the trade winds return to their duty of blowing offshore daily, the swell is pumping and there are far fewer surfers than in the peak season. Ever heard the expression the early bird catches the worm, well it could not be more applicable apart from in this case the “worm” is world class, uncrowded, warm water waves.
